HQ for The News & Coast FM The Westport News (est 1871) is published daily Monday to Friday and features local, national and international news and sport, farming, education, arts and “health & home” pages. Westport is the principal town in Buller (northwest Nelson) and serves a population of 10,000. It, along with Westland, makes up the West Coast of the South Island, New Zealand’s scenic wonderland. The main industries are coal mining, cement making, farming, fishing and tourism. The West Coast of the South Island is home to 30,000 people scattered from Karamea in the north to Jackson’s Bay in the south. West Coasters are famous for their warm hospitality, fierce independence born of Irish roots, and irreverence of the law. They live on a small coastal plain which runs the length of the South Island overseen by the snow-capped Southern Alps, where glaciers push down to the sea and limestone caves provide great opportunity for adventure tourism, where rapid rivers rush into the Tasman unimpeded, and where cottage industry serves a growing tourism industry. |
